The Claddagh ring — two hands holding a heart which wears a crown, explained in the phrase “Let Love and Friendship reign” — originated in the fishing village of the Claddagh near Galway Bay and has been used as a wedding ring for over four hundred years. Worn by Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII, these Irish rings were made and supplied by Dillon of Galway, to whom the Royal Patent was granted. Claddagh Ring FAQs
What does the Claddagh ring mean?
The motif — two hands holding a heart which wears a crown — is explained in the phrase “Let Love and Friendship reign”, an ideal poesy for a wedding ring. Read our full guide to the Claddagh ring meaning.
How do you wear a Claddagh ring?
The tradition is very distinctive: worn with the crown pointing towards the fingernail, the wearer is said to be in love or married; worn with the heart pointing to the fingernail, the wearer is said to be unattached.
Is it Claddagh, claddaugh or cladagh ring?
The correct spelling is Claddagh, named for the “shore” or “Claddagh” of Galway Bay. It is often searched as claddaugh ring, cladagh ring, clatter ring or callaghan ring — all refer to the same Irish ring.
Are your Claddagh rings made in Galway, Ireland?
Yes. Thomas Dillon's, established in 1750, is the only firm still in existence since 1750 making the Original Ring, handcrafted in Galway at No. 1 Quay Street — home of the Claddagh ring museum.
